Inspired By Kelly and a Blogger Award

Back in August my dear friend Kelly with

Style Attic

graciously passed on to me The Super Comments Award.  Coming from her I was truly humbled.  Kelly is normally one of the first to comment on our blog and always has something both inspiring and generous to say.

The protocol when you receive an award from another blogger is to answer a series of questions and then pass the award on to others that have been wonderful to leave comments and send E-mails to you as well.

Passing the award on is the easy part.  I look forward to it, but I'll save that part till the end.  Answering the questions ismuch harder.  It means focusing on myself which is not exactly my favorite thing to do.  That's the reason it has taken me until now to complete this task, but I'm truly honored so here goes…

1)  Why do you blog?

Great question!  Some days I wonder myself?  If you don't blog you probably have no idea how much time it really takes.  Researching, writing, following and commenting on other blogs…the list goes on and on. I didn't even know what a blog was until a couple of years ago when I was googling a Houston designer I love (Pamela Pierce) hoping to see more of her work.  She didn't have a website orblog but my search landed me on

Cote de Texas

.  For those of you who know Joni, you also know that I was instantly hooked.  I followed her for almost a year without ever commenting because I was too intimidated.  I slowly started to comment and follow other blogs as well.  Pretty ironic that I would end up with The Super Comments Award, hey?

Eleven months ago I started this little blog and have had a blast.  I've definitely received more than I've ever given.  I am a better Designer, Retailer, and Business Woman because I blog.  I am daily exposed to the very best talent from all over the world.  The constant inspiration is overwhelming.  I would venture to say that one of the questions you should ask the designer you are considering hiring is, do you blog?  It is a powerful tool in our business, yet it's only one of the reasons I blog.  The relationships I have developed with fellow bloggers and design enthusiasts has been incredible.  I wouldn't trade that for anything.  The question is no longer, why do I blog?  It becomes, why wouldn't I?

2)  Name your three best memories.

Now we're getting to the hard stuff.  There are obvious things like the day I got married, times at the lake and etc. but I think I'll share some less obvious memories that have really shaped who I am.

First from my childhood, it would be the "old neighborhood".  I grew up on a dead end street in North Little Rock, Arkansas.  There were lots of kids and we played outside constantly.  We had carnivals in our carport (remember those?), I made a make-shift library in the storage room off the carport, we rode bicycles, played badminton.  On most summer nights a group of our parents would pull out lawn chairs and gather in someone's front yard while the kids played games in the street (not much traffic on a dead end street).  We really loved those nights because it meant we got to stay out after dark.  When we weren't running from activity to activity we made our own fun and wonderful memories as well.

Second was the day we brought Cappi home.  It was 14 years ago this April and I can easily re-live every moment of it.  She was so precious and still is.  She is an only child/pup, a complete joy and the light of our lives.

Third was being baptised in the Jordan River along with my husband by our dear friend Robert Lewis in February of 1995.  It was an awesome life changing experience.

3)  Name four of the best fiction books you have read.

I'll have to admit that I mainly read design books, The Bible, Christian Living Books and non-fiction.  I'll share a few of my favorites.  My four favorite design books right now are John Saladino's Villa,  Bobby McAlpine's The Home Within Us, Suzanne Rheinstein's At Home and Bunny Williams Scrapbook For Living.

4)  What are the five best movies ever made?

  1. Steel Magnolias
  1. Something's Gotta Give
  1. Julie and Julia
  1. Fried Green Tomatoes
  1. The Champ

You can tell I'm kind of sappy, huh?

5)  Name five things I cannot live without.

  1. My Faith
  1. Friends and Family
  1. Computer/I-phone (Does that count as two?)
  1. Manicures and pedicures
  1. Cheese dip and chips

6)  If you could change your name what would it be?

I've never been particularly fond of my name, so you would think this would be an easy one to answer.   I always hated it when I was a kid and people would come up to me and sing the" Mona Lisa" song. However, I've never really given any thought to another name , so it's hard to come up with.  Every name I think of that I really like doesn't seem to suit  me, so I guess I'll just stick with my mother's first choice.  I just am who I am, and that's Mona.

7)  Tell us a unique and interesting fact about yourself.

I'm really good with grout and a glue gun!  Seriously, "Sister" and I quit our "paying" jobs and started Tesserae Originals 12 years ago.  We designed Mosaic crosses, mirrors and bowls.  We wholesaled them to specialty boutiques across the country.  We sold that business and used the proceeds to start our antique business 7 years ago.  Along the way we decorated for ourselves and friends and family and eventually paying clients.  It has been quite a ride.

8)  What do you love best about yourself?

The ability to think for myself and see things clearly enough to advise others.  I love listening to my friends and helping them see things from a different perspective.  One of my best friends thinks I should be a life coach.  I don't know about that, but encouraging others gives me a lot of satisfaction.

9)  If you had a freaky Friday experience, who would you change places with?

Tory Burch.  She is so cute, so successful, yet seems totally grounded.  I really like that!  She's also younger than I am, sigh…

10)  What is the best thing about being a woman?

Having that 6th sense and the ability to feel and experience things to the fullest.  Dim the lights, light the candles, turn on the music and I can be anywhere in the world.  It's just that " feeling" and "atmosphere" that I cannot live without.  I guess that's why I do what I do.

And now for the best part.  It's time to pass this wonderful award on to those that have inspired me with their talent, amazed me with their words and always, always encouraged me with their faithful comments.

super comments blog award

In no particular order I pass the Super Comments Award on to…

There are so many others that have been wonderful to leave comments as well.  Three that immediately come to mind won this award at the same time I did, but I just have to mention them.  They rarely miss a post and always leave an encouraging word.

I'm worn out.  This was longer than the Academy Awards Show.

Do you have even a second left?  I've been doing all the talking and it's your turn.

Let's Talk!
