Tips on Thursday
Spring cleaning is just around the corner, and we know it’s often difficult to be objective yourself about your own clutter. But it’s time…you just have to do it.
Now that the beautiful Christmas tree and decor are down you realize things have been moved and are out of place. It’s time for a fresh start.
I’ve been watching Tidying up with Marie Kondo on Netflix and it has been such a help with getting in a mind set of organization. If you haven’t read her book or watched the show - start there. It seems like everyone has been inspired by her.
One of my favorite things about Marie Kondo is the the method she uses to organize by categories rather than by room. Once you throw away/donate unnecessary items it will help give you that clean slate. The other part of Marie’s Method I think can be helpful is making it a new habit to “keep” spaces uncluttered. Shifting to a daily routine of putting things in their appropriate place is a better way to live and eliminates the need for the annual big job.
So lets start….
Take a photo with your phone -
Sometimes a different perspective helps even if it’s just from your own camera.. You are just so used to walking into your space and seeing things as they always have been. Snapping pictures and analyzing them magnifies those things that just need to go… because, clutter just happens and accumulates without us realizing it. I do this all the time…it works!
Itemized List -
It’s easy to say “get rid of things” but sometimes it’s hard to get a grip on what you really want to keep and what you don’t need anymore. Get a pen and a notepad and write down a list of what you have in the room that you use/will use… an itemized list (Call it inventory if you will) EX: Bathroom….. Hair Items, medicine bottles, skin care, makeup, hygiene products. Organize each thing in the necessary space. If you need to keep yourself organized - Container Store has some great tools to keep organized.
Grab a Tape Measure -
Center your furniture pieces. Be precise. When we do an install we always make sure everything is centered on necessary focal points. It gives a real harmony to the space. Don’t worry about buying new things right away - start with what you have and make it right. For example decide what your furniture should center on… Mantel, hanging light fixture, tv cabinet… etc. Once you decide what to center on make your main pieces make sense accordingly. EX: The living room below has a coffee table, two chairs, sofa and rug as the main pieces. Vertically centering on the mantel and horizontally centering on the set of doors creates a beautiful entry point and gives the layout structure that makes it look cleaner. This also works with wall hangings… Use the furniture as the anchor for hanging those pieces.
Hide your cords-
Command hooks are your friend. No one wants to see the cords. Whether it be on a sideboard… or in the Living Room on an open base console. Command hooks are always in our tool box. .
You are well on your way now…Clutter is gone. You feel great about being well organized. Everything has it’s place. Your furniture is back in order after the holidays…and with attention to the details arranged better than ever. You’ve hidden the ugly cords and anything else that might distract from the space.
