Kitchen and Breakfast Room Lighting

We are finding it much easier to blog more regularly if we blog about the things that we are working on...

We get double duty out of our research...

Lighting is a constant search, so this will be the first of many posts focusing on different aspects of lighting...

We can't stress enough the importance of good lighting..

first for function... and equally as important for aesthetics...

Scale is everything...quality means a lot, and unique is what makes the difference in the end...

It saddens us to see how many nice homes are filled with builder chosen fixtures that were all ordered at once from a lighting supplier. The salesman has taken a lighting list ... checked off a budget and chosen the fixtures... Ugh!

Today we are focusing on kitchens...this can involve more than one fixture...normally an island...and more than likely open to a casual dining area...

Here's some inspiration we found ...let's see what you think?

We're sure you've seen several of these images before...but isn't it interesting to focus merely on the lighting?...

In the few instances where there is the ideal spot ...sconces are incredible in a kitchen...a little more unexpected in this room of the house...

We're a big fan of  lanterns...and really love a beautiful chandelier...the two go so well together.

One of our very favorite light fixtures ever...

is hanging over the breakfast table in the last image from At Home in Arkansas...this is one of our projects, and we now carry the chandelier in our online store.

It also comes in a large round and smaller sizes as well...but this 6 arm beauty is truly amazing. Combining different fixtures over the island and casual dining table in open floor plans can be a challenge...this piece mixes well with everything...lanterns, pendants or an iron chandelier with candles.

Let's Play In The Dirt...

We love to play in the dirt...and it's almost that time.

For the best results this season...plan early.

We've all done it. That first sunny day in mid April, we just can't stand it any longer and head to the Home Depot Garden Center or our favorite local nursery and start buying stuff...

It all looks so fresh and pretty, so we just start buying without a plan.

That's the same mistake we keep making over and over again, both inside and outside of our homes.

We're girls...we like to buy!!!

Do yourself a favor and plan first this season...You will be so glad that you did.

It's the same process as inside your home...tear out sheets in magazines...go online...check out pinterest...

Late last season my good friend Debra from Scentimental Gardens and Fifth and State Blog drew some fabulous plans for garden areas in my landscape.  I can hardly wait to get going with the implementation this season...

You don't have to have a formal plan...but if you really want one I would suggest that you

contact Debra.  We consulted back and forth completely online and she did a magnificent job...

Gather ideas, formulate some sort of plan...and at the end of the day enjoy the fruits of your labor...

French Country Charm...

It's hard to believe that we're just getting around to doing a complete post about our project that was featured in At Home in Arkansas this month.  We collaborated with Bill Parkinson of Parkinson Building Group and his wife  Jessica on their own new residence.  We thought you might enjoy details through out the process, and we needed the time to pull it all together...

9a.jpghousefront.jpg

Let's go back...way back to the construction phase...

From the very beginning we planned to incorporate special architectural features and planned for antique or unique lighting...

Starting with the dining room...

The candlestick sconces were purchased before the plans were even complete...the lantern was another great find from an antique shop in Dallas...

2a.jpgdiningroomcfrest.jpg

Here's a shot right after move in...

IMAG0538.jpgdiningroom.jpg

You can see we recovered the chairs flanking the sideboard with a sculptured blue velvet, added another linen skirted bench and interesting cane back chairs at the ends of the table.  We also changed out the art on the opposite side of the room that reflects in the mirror for an older oil landscape.  We added the hand painted crests and a beautiful warm rug.  The candelabras that remained on the dining table have been in the family for years.  They are really beautiful.  The other accessories were the finishing touch.  This is one of our favorite rooms in the house.

2a.jpgdiningroomcfrest.jpg

Between the dining and kitchen is a beautiful little butler pantry...

We found these fabulous lanterns at Round Top for the groin vault ceiling in the gallery that connects the public and private living spaces...

DSC00046.JPG
picture12.jpggallery.jpg

OK...maybe this is one of our favorite spots...We love the wonderful thick wood shelves at the end of the hallway...The stained concrete floors, wonderful French doors leading to the covered porch, beautiful iron railing, antique French chair and painting of our client's great grandfather.

Image (232).jpggallery.jpg

Lot's of planning went into the kitchen on the front end...

These fabulous old found shutters became cabinet doors on either side of the plaster hood...

DSC00796-300x225.jpgshutters.jpg
corbels.jpg

We also found the old stone corbels, then...the hood was designed around them...

picture6.jpghood.jpg

The kitchen is really beautiful with the combination of gray weathered cabinets, stained wood, brick and stone...and the beams in the kitchen and family room are fabulous!

5.jpgkitchenhood.jpg

The iron chandelier is an old piece that we found had re-wired and added natural beeswax candle sleeves.

Maybe this is our favorite?

In the breakfast room we recovered and skirted in linen inherited wing backs for end chairs.  The side chairs were originally dark wood.  They were  painted and recovered.  The chandelier with the burlap shade is the icing on the cake.  It pairs beautifully with the old iron chandelier over the island.

The kitchen and breakfast area are open to the family room...

Here's a before...right after they moved in.

After...

This room is another mix of old and new...reupholstered and repainted.

The powder room is filled with unique features..The iron console sink base is an old piece from Europe. The old sconces were rewired and mounted to the shutters on either side of a window rather than hanging the traditional mirror above the sink.  An antique round mirror hangs on a side wall...

This is definitely in competition for the favorites.

The Master bedroom is still a work in progress...Here is the Before...

IMAG0540.jpgmasterbedroom.jpg

After...

The bedside tables are actually an antique painted game table that we split in half and mounted to the wall.  They are now fitted with linen gathered skirts to hide the cords and give them a unique look.  We had neutral linen drapes installed and the direction of the entire room will eventually be much lighter...for now we removed the green and chocolate pillows and duvet at the end of the bed.  Painted mirrors replaced the old art and new lamps and accessories were added.

It turned out so lovely they are going to take a break before going to the next phase.

The Master Bath...

Beautiful paint finish on the cabinets and old sconces rewired and mounted on the mirrors..

The covered porch needed a lot of attention.  The Parkinson's spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying the wonderful view...

We can never thank Diane Carroll editor of At Home in Arkansas, enough.  She works tirelessly to get the perfect shot and is a joy to work with.  If you haven't seen the magazine I hope that you willclick here to view the feature on their site.  We can't do it justice with our scans and the other pictures we took ourselves.

This was a true labor of love...we had fun leaving messages back and forth with Bill and Jessica about our new" favorite thing" as the project progressed.  Luckily we have the opportunity to work with Bill on other projects and have fun creating "favorite things" for their homes too.

What do you think?  Do you have a favorite thing?

It's your turn.  Let's talk.

Sunday Supper...Lemon Chicken

Not a lot of time this weekend for the kitchen...here's a super easy lemon chicken recipe that we love.  You can prepare it on the stove or in the crock pot...

The recipe is from The Queen Bee's Hive...lot's of fun stuff on her blog.

Lemon Chicken

Melt 1 cube butter in fry pan.

Layer on 4 Chicken Breasts, or Chicken Tenders.

Sprinkle with 1 pkg. Italian Seasonings Salad Dressing Mix

Add juice of 2 lemons.

Cook until tender. Put the lid on at first, then take off at the end in order to brown and absorb seasonings.

Can be done in crock pot. (For chicken breast:  Cook on Hi: 4-5 hours, on Low:  6-8 hours.  When finished cooking, take out, shred chicken with 2 forks, and ladle on the juices.

Thanksgiving is at my house...so I'm starting to play with table setting ideas...

Definitely going with simple and and natural...

438810384_5AyFRvDQ_c.jpg

I would add pumpkins and moss into this arrangement.   Love the apple candles, but would just loosen this up a bit.

296339985_JoqdZASO_c.jpg

Love the mixed elements here and the addition of the pheasant feathers.  I have a box full of those...

438848615_19cj4c7H_c.jpgmarthastewart.jpg

The colors in this arrangement are beautiful and would be perfect in my dining room...

It's great to get a heads up going in my mind, to take the last minute pressure off.

But it's dine in the kitchen tonight...
